My Daughter’s First Communion May 14
Last weekend, my youngest daughter celebrated her Firsty Holy Communion. He older sister tends to be the one that takes these ceremonies very seriously, while Kira usually looks forward to the social aspect of the events. But this time she was quite reverent, excited, and mature.
This child is my athlete that lives in sport shorts and t-shirts - the grubbier the better! Needless to say, she wasn’t terribly thrilled with the idea of wearing a pretty white dress. My mother found a very simple dress that she agreed to wear. And we decided that shoes with a heel were not a very good idea, as she tended to walk on the heels alone. So, some simple flats with some knee-high socks were chosen (tights make her itch). The veil was another issue. It couldn’t be too fluffy or frilly. She finally decided that her sister’s veil was OK, since the small decorative bows were in the back where she couldn’t see them. To finish it all off, she wore a lovely heart locket that we gave her as a gift.
While her attire was appropriate and lovely (her three year-old cousin said she looked like a princess), it was not the most important part of the day for her. She truly put the “look” into perspective and focused on the meaning of the celebration itself. It was a lovely day for a lovely girl with a beautiful heart.
