GIFTS FOR A YOUNG GIRL’S ROOM

My oldest daughter is a full-blown pre-teen. Most of the time, she is cheerful and loves to spend time with her family. But she is spending a bit more time on the phone with her friends, and she is spending more and more time in her bedroom sorting out her “moods”.

The main theme of pre-teen bedrooms seems to be bright, fun colors – and the more color the better. In our previous home, she chose hot pink for her room. Now we are in a new home, and this time, she decided on a multi-colored theme including aqua blue, violet, and yellow. Muted colors appear to be “out of style”. Besides, this is probably the only time in her life when she will be able to have a bright, multi-colored bedroom, and the bright colors seem to temper those pre-teen “moods”.

The gift choices for a young girl’s room seem nearly endless these days. For starters, there’s the bed covering. My daughter received a great bedspread for Christmas that is mostly aqua blue, but has accents of violet, yellow, and green. This has served as the “inspiration” if you will, for the rest of the room. Bed coverings may seem a bit expensive to give as a gift, but accent pillows are pretty inexpensive, and they can never have too many of these. The funkier the pillow is, the better the pre-teen likes it. If you can’t find a pillow with glitter or fur on it, consider buying some fun trim or fabric paint at a craft store to spruce it up a bit.

The other item that seemed to make all the difference in my daughter’s room was her lamp. I was amazed at how many stores now sell fun, colorful lamps. You can find them at discount stores, department stores, and even girls’ clothing stores. I found a violet colored lamp trimmed in metallic silver, and this was a huge hit.

While pre-teens are conformists, they also like to personalize their things, and their rooms are no exception. Displaying their name or initials in wooden letters is popular. You can find these wooden letters in discount and craft stores. A great gift idea would be to purchase the letters along with some bright paints and allow the child to paint the letters in her own style. If “crafting” is not your thing, you can also find personalized room signs in every color of the rainbow.

And who can forget accessories – certainly not a pre-teen girl. Colorful baskets in all shapes and sizes always come in handy for keeping earrings, hair accessories, and writing utensils. CD holders and magazine containers always come in handy. And who can forget the picture frames. Even a couple of spools of ribbon or scrapbook paper can give a young girl inspiration to create and decorate her own accessories.

Pre-teen girls love to have their own personal space, so giving a gift to help make her room special is a gift that will be remembered.
